Background

The Academy of Sciences is a learned scientific institution that serves as a central body for research expertise and scholarly coordination in Russia. In the Russian context, it is associated with broad scientific and academic work, including fields that extend beyond the natural sciences into social sciences and the humanities. Its role matters because academies of sciences are used to organize expert knowledge, support national research priorities, and contribute to the public authority of state-backed scholarship.

Institutionally, the academy is structured as a formal scientific organization with members drawn from major fields of study and with internal divisions covering different disciplines. Like other national academies, it operates within the wider state-supported research system and is linked to government and educational policy through consultation and expert review. Its standing gives it a place in the production of official scientific guidance, including participation in the preparation of educational materials and other national academic standards.

In recent Russian practice, the academy has continued to be referenced in connection with state education policy and textbook development. In March 2026, Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov said that the ministry was preparing unified state textbooks together with the Academy of Sciences, indicating its involvement in curriculum-related work. More broadly, this reflects the academy’s continuing function as a source of authoritative scientific input and its relevance to national priorities in education, research coordination, and the organization of knowledge.
