Background

Krasnodar Krai is a federal subject of Russia in the North Caucasus region of Southern Russia, and it forms part of the Southern Federal District. Its administrative center is Krasnodar, and it is the third most populous federal subject in the country, with a population of 5,838,273 recorded in the 2021 Census. The krai is also widely known as Kuban, a name associated with the historical region situated between the Sea of Azov and the Kuban River, much of which lies within its territory.

The krai occupies a strategically important position on Russia’s southern edge. It borders Rostov Oblast to the north, Stavropol Krai to the east, and Karachay-Cherkessia to the southeast, while Adygea is an enclave entirely surrounded by its territory. To the south it shares an international border with Georgia and the partially recognized republic of Abkhazia, and to the west it faces annexed Crimea across the Kerch Strait. The region includes Novorossiysk, Russia’s main port on the Black Sea, and is home to significant infrastructure associated with the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet.

Krasnodar Krai combines steppe, coastal, and mountain-adjacent landscapes, with the northern part including part of the Don Steppe and the southern part having a Mediterranean climate that has made it a major tourist destination. Sochi gained additional international prominence as the host city of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014. The territory’s historical identity as Kuban, along with its location on major land and sea routes, has shaped its continuing importance in transport, tourism, and security matters.
