Mediterranean Sea
Background
The Mediterranean Sea is an intercontinental sea located between Europe, Asia, and Africa and is almost completely enclosed by land. It is bordered by southern Europe, Anatolia and the Levant in West Asia, and North Africa, and it connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. The sea also has links to the Black Sea through the Bosporus and to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal, giving it a central position between several major maritime regions.
Because it links Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, the Mediterranean has long been a major route for shipping, trade, travel, and migration. It remains strategically important for international commerce and maritime security, including the movement of energy supplies, cargo, and naval traffic between the Atlantic, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean system via the Suez Canal. The sea’s many coastal states and island territories also make it a politically sensitive space where incidents at sea can have diplomatic consequences across multiple countries.
The Mediterranean region has played a major role in the development of early civilizations, including those of Egypt, Greece, and the Fertile Crescent, and the sea was central to trade and cultural exchange in antiquity. The Roman Empire controlled the entire coastline at one point, underlining its historical importance as a strategic basin. In modern times, it continues to attract attention for maritime security and regional instability, including the March 2026 attack on the civilian commercial vessel Arctic Metagaz in the central Mediterranean, which Russia’s Foreign Ministry described as terrorism and a war crime.
