Moscow
Background
Moscow is the capital and largest city of Russia, located on the Moskva River in Central Russia. It is governed as a federal city and serves as the country’s political, economic, cultural, and scientific center. With a population of more than 13 million in the city proper and over 21.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is the most populous city entirely in Europe and one of the world’s largest urban centers.
The city has major importance in Russian and international affairs because it is the seat of the Government of Russia and the main center for national decision-making. Moscow also hosts key diplomatic activity, including meetings involving Russian officials and foreign counterparts, and it is the venue for major state institutions and international gatherings. Economically, it contains one of the world’s largest urban economies and the Moscow International Business Center, which is a significant financial district and a concentration of major commercial activity.
Moscow was first documented in 1147 and became the capital of the Grand Principality of Moscow, which played a central role in the unification of Russian lands in the 15th century. Although the capital was moved to Saint Petersburg in 1712, Moscow regained capital status in 1918 after the Russian Revolution and later became the political center of the Soviet Union. It remained the capital of the Russian Federation after 1991, and recent official meetings held there, including sessions of the Union State Supreme State Council, underline its continuing role as a venue for high-level interstate diplomacy.
