Background

Omsk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia classified as an oblast, located in southwestern Siberia. It covers an area of 139,700 square kilometers and had a population of 1,977,665 at the 2010 Census. The administrative center is Omsk, which contains the majority of the oblast’s population, with about 1.12 million residents.

The oblast’s location gives it significance in Russia’s internal geography and in cross-border relations. It borders Tyumen Oblast to the north and west, Novosibirsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast to the east, and Kazakhstan to the south. This position places it within a major transit and administrative corridor linking central Siberia with the Russian-Kazakh border region.

In recent federal policy context, Omsk Oblast has also appeared in nationwide public and administrative initiatives. It was among the regions that advanced to the final of the All-Russian Competition “Financial Culture Capital 2026,” reflecting its participation in federal regional programs. Its continued prominence is closely tied to Omsk, the largest city and governing center of the oblast, which anchors the region’s demographic and administrative profile.
