Republic of Bashkortostan
Background
The Republic of Bashkortostan is a federal subject of Russia in Eastern Europe, situated between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. It borders Perm Krai, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Orenburg Oblast, Tatarstan, and Udmurtia, giving it a central position in the Volga-Ural region. Covering about 143,600 square kilometres, it is the seventh-most populous federal subject in Russia and the most populous republic. Its capital and largest city is Ufa, and the republic’s population was about 4,046,094 as of 2025.
Bashkortostan has importance in Russian administrative, economic, and public policy affairs because of its size, population, and location at the junction of European Russia and the Urals. It is one of Russia’s republics, which gives it a distinct constitutional status within the federation, and it is defined as a state in the constitutions of Bashkortostan and Russia. The republic’s large population and urban center in Ufa make it a significant regional hub for governance and service delivery. Its inclusion among the finalists in the All-Russian Competition “Financial Culture Capital 2026” also indicates its participation in federal initiatives related to regional development and public administration.
The republic’s modern history dates to 28 November 1917, when Bashkortostan was established, and it was transformed on 20 March 1919 into the Bashkir ASSR, the first autonomous republic in the Russian SFSR. On 11 October 1990, it adopted a Declaration of State Sovereignty, reflecting the broader constitutional changes affecting Soviet and post-Soviet regions. The name Bashkiria is also used historically and informally for the same territory. Recent references in official documents, including a 2026 decree of the Head of the Republic of Bashkortostan on awarding the “Maternal Glory” medal, show the continued role of the republican government in domestic policy and social awards.
