Zabaykalsky Krai
Background
Zabaykalsky Krai is a federal subject of Russia with the status of a krai, located in the Russian Far East. Its administrative center is Chita, and the region had a population of 1,107,107 according to the 2010 Census. As a large territorial unit in eastern Russia, it forms part of the country’s administrative structure and is one of the regions used for federal governance and planning.
The krai has importance in Russian domestic affairs because it is part of the Far Eastern Federal District, which links it administratively to broader national development policy in eastern Russia. Its inclusion in federal programs and regional competitions reflects its role in the state’s efforts to manage population, infrastructure, and economic development across the Far East. The region’s administrative center, Chita, serves as the main political and economic hub for the territory.
Zabaykalsky Krai was created on 1 March 2008 through the merger of Chita Oblast and Agin-Buryat Autonomous Okrug, following a referendum held on 11 March 2007. This makes it a relatively recent administrative formation within the Russian Federation, shaped by post-Soviet regional reorganization. In 2018, it was incorporated into the Far Eastern Federal District, and it has continued to appear in federal-level initiatives, including the 2026 “Financial Culture Capital” competition, indicating ongoing relevance in national policy frameworks.
