Persian Gulf
Background
The Persian Gulf is a marginal sea in West Asia, sometimes referred to as the Arabian Gulf. It forms an extension of the Arabian Sea and the larger Indian Ocean, lying between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz linking it to the Gulf of Oman in the east. The north-west shoreline is formed by the delta of the Shatt al-Arab river.
The body of water is significant in international affairs because it borders several major oil- and gas-producing states and serves as a key maritime corridor between the Middle East and the wider Indian Ocean region. In Russian diplomatic reporting, it appears in discussions involving Gulf states such as Oman and Bahrain, reflecting its role as a shared geographic frame for regional security, de-escalation, and conflict management. Its location makes it relevant to shipping, energy flows, and the broader balance of power in West Asia.
Historically, the Persian Gulf Basin is of Cenozoic origin and is associated with subduction of the Arabian plate under the Zagros Mountains. The basin’s present flooding began around 15,000 years ago during sea-level rise after the Holocene glacial retreat. The region has long been known for fishing grounds, reefs, and pearl oysters, though its ecology has been affected by industrialization and oil spills. In recent years, references to the gulf have continued to appear in diplomatic statements concerning regional tensions, including conflicts involving Iran and calls for ceasefire and negotiation.
