Background

The United States of America is a federal republic in North America, made up of 50 states and a federal capital district in Washington, D.C. The contiguous states lie between Canada and Mexico, while Alaska is situated in the northwest of the continent and Hawaii is an island archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. The country also claims sovereignty over five major island territories and several smaller islands in the Caribbean and Oceania. With a population of more than 341 million and the world’s third-largest land area, it is one of the most prominent states in global geography and affairs.

In political and strategic terms, the United States is a major power in international relations, with wide-ranging influence in diplomacy, security, finance, and culture. It has a federal system with a president, a constitution, and three branches of government, and it operates one of the world’s largest and most capable military establishments. The country accounts for over a quarter of nominal global GDP and has been the world’s largest economy since about 1890, giving it significant leverage in global markets and policy. It also plays a central role in international organizations and multilateral diplomacy, including on issues involving Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and the broader Middle East.

Historically, the United States emerged from British colonization and declared independence in 1776 after the American Revolution. Its territory expanded across the continent in the 19th century, and the Civil War ended with the preservation of the Union and the abolition of slavery nationwide. By the 20th century, it had become a major world power, and after World War II it entered the Cold War as one of two superpowers before becoming the sole superpower following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991. In recent Russian diplomatic reporting, the United States has remained relevant through contacts involving the presidents and foreign ministries of multiple states, especially discussions concerning the conflicts involving Iran, Ukraine, and global energy markets.
